Arthur Mittag

Arthur Mittag, age 91, of Alexandria, died Thursday, December 17, 2015. A funeral service will be held 1 PM Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Interment will follow in the Leaf Mountain Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 Noon to 1 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. OBITUARY Arthur Robert Mittag was born September 4, 1924 in Leaf Mountain Township, MN, the son of William and Christine (Solmonson) Mittag. He was raised on the family farm in Leaf Mountain Township and attended School #283. Following his schooling he worked on the farm with his brother Walter. Arthur joined the US Navy in January of 1945 and served as a Seabee at Okinawa. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in October 1946. Arthur returned to the family farm. On November 14, 1951 he was united in marriage to Clara Mickelson. Arthur continued to farm the home farm until 1962. Arthur moved his family a number of times; he worked for a time in Forest Lake, MN and and then moved to Parkers Prairie in 1963 where he went to work for Herzog Roofing and later for Buttweiler’s . In 1966 Arthur moved his family to a farm north of Carlos, MN. There he ran a small dairy farm for several years on the side. In the late 1980’s he sold the cattle but continued doing farm work. He also retired from roofing in the late 1980’s but continued doing roofing jobs in the area. In his retirement Arthur and Clara traveled to every state in the union except Hawaii. They also traveled in Canada. Arthur enjoyed reading western books and watching westerns on the television. He was an avid Twins fan and loved listening to them on the radio. Arthur also kept busy doing mechanic work and tinkering on machinery. He liked to attend threshing bees and watching old machinery being put to work. In 2013 Arthur sold the farm and moved with Clara into Alexandria. On Thursday, December 17, 2015, Arthur died at the age of ninety-one years. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son and son, Ricky Mittag; daughter, Gwendolyn Mittag; his wife, Clara: brother, Walter Mittag; and sister, Alice Sandahl. Arthur is survived by his daughters, Roxanne Mittag and friend, John Lenarz, of Alexandria, Rebecca Larson and husband, Terry, of Alexandria, Delaine Mittag and friend, Randy Uhlenkamp, of West Union, and Randi Mathwig and husband, Robert, of Osakis; one son, Reno Mittag and wife, Emalyn, of Charlo, MT; grandchildren, Rosalyn Mittag, Jacob and Amanda Larson, Nathan Holt, Megan and Shanna Mathwig, and Allen and Benjamin Mittag; and one sister, Edith Olson of Clitherall, MN. A funeral service will be held 1 PM Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Reverend Darryl Knappen will officiate. Interment will be in the Leaf Mountain Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers include all of Arthur’s grandchildren. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 87, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 235 and the Minnesota National Guard.
